Dog-Dog Reactivity: Can Tanner Become Comfortable to Play With Other Dogs?

"In this episode, Jenna coaches dog guardian, Jo, through how to navigate her dog's hyperarousal towards other dogs and his resource guarding. We'll meet Tanner, a three-year-old small breed dog, who has big reactions towards other dogs when he feels threatened."

Jo talks about Tanner's playful, intelligent, and communicative nature, yet his journey is marked by anxiety-driven behaviors. Tanner exhibits resource-guarding towards unexpected treasures like a picnic blanket.

“The problem is not that he doesn't like certain dogs. The problem is that he has a compulsive reaction when he sees a certain size of a dog. And it's really important that you identify those differences because that's going to change how you set up a learning environment. Your objective in that case shouldn't be, ‘Let's get Tanner to love every single thing that he comes into contact with.’"

Jo candidly shares Tanner’s challenges faced in dog parks and play sessions, emphasizing Tanner's unique reactions to dogs based on their size and certain physical characteristics.

If you're a fellow dog guardian facing similar challenges, or if you'd like to be part of a live coaching session, don’t hesitate to reach out via Instagram DM, or email! Don't miss this episode as we embark on a journey to unravel the layers of canine behavior and enhance the bond between dogs and their guardians.
