Welcome to Game On JOY 94.9’s Home of Sport every Wednesday from 6-7pm where you’ll hear where you can get your game on! This show is all about showcasing where sport is safe, inclusive, welcoming and fun for the Rainbow community!
First we head to the beach! Winter is over. Spring is here and just around the corner is summer – at last! We dive into surf, safety, and inclusion with Dr Jake Little, Chair of Lifesavers with Pride — a group that’s been making waves by building a welcoming and inclusive surf lifesaving culture for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Dr. Nic Badcock, Associate Professor of Psychology from the University of Western Australia gave a presentation to the Perth Rainbow Swans – Perth’s premier LGBTQIA+ inclusive Masters swimming group where he was invited to talk about the important role sport plays in a sense of belonging. Nic joins us on Game On to share those learnings so that we can all benefit from that interactive session by the pool
We talk about the challenges facing trans and gender-diverse athletes in Australia to compete, participate and enjoy sport with Sam Lewis, President of The Flying Bats about the ABC’s 7.30 program highlighted the story of Riley Dennis — a trans woman footballer — and the wave of transphobia and public debate that has unfolded over the years.
We have an update on one of the biggest stories in the AFL across the past few weeks – Adelaide Crows AFL player Izak Rankine saying a homophobic slur during a game against an opponent and being handed a controversial four-game ban.
And to close the show who is getting their game on? We hear from Daisy Pearce AFLW West Coast Eagles coach in response to the Club statement shared supporting former West Coast defender Mitch Brown becoming the AFL’s first openly bisexual man – a first in an almost 130 year history.
A big thank you to our wonderful guests for their support of an inclusive and supportive sporting culture and mindset, and encouraging everyone in the Rainbow community to get their game on!
And thank you for being a part of Team Game On
