I have always loved supporting women become mothers. I started attending births as a midwifery student at the age of 18. I do not lack passion! I was a midwife for 13 years and left what I like doing because I could no longer support recommendations that lack evidence and where my heart knows they could be harmful. We see systems as superior and must be right and adhered to for safety. The opposite can be true. This podcast is to help you advocate for yourself and your family by giving you lots of resources and expansion. I want you to feel confident in your decisions.

Ep. 62 - A Surrogacy Story with Chandra Landry

I've attended births of surrogates. And I've heard alot of controversy about surrogacy as well. I wanted to interview Chandra about her process in choosing to be a surrogate. In all things lives duality and it is important that we have a dialogue about how surrogacy looks everywhere in the world.

What can a healthy and ethical surrogacy look like?

Chandra followed her joy in this process and it is inspiring.

Ep. 61 - Re-evaluating our assumptions on firearms with Remi Doucet

I'm really excited for this episode to come out. I have Remi Doucet, national champion in pistol shooting, hunter and fire arm enthusiast and my friend. Having discussions with him and other people about firearms and crime have helped me open my mind to -- reality.

What keeps us safe? Why do we use firearms? Where is crime stemming from? Who uses guns? We share a border with who? What is the fear of regulated firearms costing us?

Remi brings light to these questions.

Ep. 60 - Sachiko's breech birth

Sachiko is a client at my previous clinic who had a vaginal breech birth with us with her first baby. She shares with us how she made the decision to have a vaginal birth instead of a planned C-section. She shares her birth story with us. She also shares about her diagnosis with gestational diabetes, postpartum hemorrhage and difficulty with milk supply. Her birth happened 9 years ago. I help clarify some of these events. The recording shows that debriefing with your caregivers that were present at birth can provide alot of clarity around management and what happened. (and would be best sooner following the birth)Extra note: if you decide to take domeperidone to help increase your milk supply, it is imperative that when you stop the medication that you slowly decrease the medication. Please always inform yourself about risks and benefits, alternatives and your plan to get off any medication before taking them.

This recording does not offer any complete or accurate medical reference. This is a birth story. Please refer below for a better understanding of the research, guidelines, etc about VBB. For the best information, contact Betty-Anne Daviss R.M. to attend her presentations at conferences, etc.

Sara is such a great example of a mother who makes her decisions intuitively. And so I wanted to ask her questions about how she makes decisions for the health and wellbeing of her children and family as a whole. She is also a great expander on being at peace with decisions that may be perceived as controversial.

I hope that you enjoy this episode!

I forgot to mention this while recording:

For years we have been told that consuming a moderate amount of alcohol is safe and even be beneficial in the case of red wine.

The researchers of a metanalysis reviewed 107 cohortstudies. They saw that the pro alcohol studies were funded by the alcohol industry and we’ve seen other studies showing that moderate consumption of alcohol can increase the risk for cancers of breast, esophagus, head and neckand are linked to high blood pressure and serious heart arrhythmias called atrial fibrillation.

Ep. 56 - Vaginal Seeding (microbiome of newborns after planned CSection)

In this episode, I discuss:

- what is vaginal seeding

- medical recommendations (realities of medicine) and pathogens

- research, where it's at

- ways of impacting the microbe of your baby (there are multiple ways)

- differences of babies born vaginally or by CSection in the longterm (specifically breech)

The word I was looking for was antiseptic solution (detergent! :P )

In my practice I had only seen one of these studies before switching to a practice of everyone using the antiseptic solution pre-operatively. We are quick to jump to products!

Vaginal preparation with antiseptic solution before cesarean section for preventing postoperative infections. Haas et al. 2020.

The reason why endometriosis (uterine infection) is increasing is because CSection rates are going up (let's get to the root cause of the issue!). The biggest risk factors for infection is having had many vaginal exams after membranes have ruptures (water breaking).

Studies need to look at if antiseptic solutions are best given as prophylaxis to everyone or to those is risk factors or those who already have uterine infection before surgery.

In addition, how does the antiseptic affect the vaginal flora of mothers and babies (both with rupture membranes and intact membranes). Sunshine and gardening (soil) impacts our skin microbiome (things to possibly indulge in before birth and skin to skin with babe). Reducing sugar and yeast is good for our gut microbiome.

Ep. 55 - Positive birth story - Amy Longard's process

After surrounding myself with pregnant women, I've re-re-realised that our culture needs to come back to reality when it comes to birth.

So I asked Amy to share her process of how she prepared for birth and motherhood. She got pregnant at the age of 38 and throughout her pregnancy made choices that enabled her to learn and choose what was right for her. She also shares what she would do differently.

This episode is full of wisdom and insights.

Amy tells us about:

- her pregnancy

- her birth story

- breastfeeding journey

- how she prepped

- how she advocated for herself

Ep. 53 - Advocating for yourself

Advocating for yourself is daunting. However, it doesn't have to be.

Everyone is disappointed in the health care system, care givers and receivers alike. How can you make your care a better experience, whether you are at an appointment, the ER, admitted in hospital, 8cm dilated?

I'm a retired midwife. I've had to advocate for my clients, myself (for my own care) and my colleagues and their clients. Clients have had to advocate for themselves too with me. I've had every role in this aspect of care.

Here are stories of my clients, me getting my care (ER and scheduled appointment), family stories, etc.

What do care providers want to hear if you are declining a procedure? What can make the conversation easy for everyone? What is the role of the care provider in this context?

When it comes to your health, knowledge is power. Ignorance is not bliss.

Advocacy starts with you. You might change something the entire hospital is doing. You might change your care providers career, like my client did with me. And you'll never know the true ripple effects of what you are standing up for.

Ep. 51 - Staying curious in a divided world with Christopher Balkaran

Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Christopher Balkaran, host of the Open Minds podcast, where he speaks with guests whose knowledge and perspectives often challenge the mainstream narrative.

How does Christopher speak publicly about politically charged topics while working in the public sector? How does he hold space for people with opposing views—and why does he do it?

This episode is both inspiring and thought-provoking. It highlights the value of curiosity and the importance of not letting ourselves be narrowly defined by political views.

Christopher also shares updates on gender identity laws in New Brunswick schools and offers a clear summary of what’s currently happening with Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) in Canada—including how it relates to children.

Ep. 47 - Listening to the fetal heart. Is the evidence congruent with the management?

Good morning!

In this episode, I discuss the "evidence" there is for monitoring the fetal heart rate in pregnancy and in labour and the outcomes of the recommendations we follow.

I cover:

- definitions and different ways of listening to the baby's heart rate

- the management and evidence for low risk women

- the management and evidence for "high" risk women

- I touch on the evidence of certain indications (meconium, VBAC, vaginal breech birth, preterm labour, oxytocin administration, reduced fetal movement)

- Where the research has been focused and what we should be better assessing in studies

- Who benefits from our management of fetal assessment

- Industrial betrayal

- Expansion in choosing different care and also providing evidence based care/ thorough informed choice

Ep. 46 - When is active labour? (Reducing intervention rates)

The definition of the start of active labour is actually controversial. What we define as the start of active labour is not well evidence based. Timing of admission/active labour impacts the outcomes of birth and might be the biggest determinant for CSection rates. Here's a summary of the evidence, my experience and the importance of timing of the start of active labour.

For clients, this episode might make you better understand decisions that you baby catcher has to make and better understand why early labour at home is important.

Ep. 45 - Increase in maternal mortality in Canada warrants more attention

When I became a midwife, a purpose of mine was to contribute to the reduction of adverse outcome including maternal mortality. This episode has a purpose of starting dialogue, bringing attention to important and devastating statistics that we need to be proactive about. This will require controversial discussion.

From The Heart
I have always loved supporting women become mothers. I started attending births as a midwifery student at the age of 18. I do not lack passion! I was a midwife for 13 years and left what I like doing because I could no longer support recommendations that lack evidence and where my heart knows they could be harmful. We see systems as superior and must be right and adhered to for safety. The opposite can be true. This podcast is to help you advocate for yourself and your family by giving you lots of resources and expansion. I want you to feel confident in your decisions.
