We learn gender long before we understand it. The way we’re supposed to walk, talk, dress, express emotion, flirt, lead, soften, hold back. So much of it comes from the world around us - our homes, our culture, media, school hallways, locker rooms. And for a lot of us, the roles we were handed never really fit.
In this week’s episode of Friends with Benefits, Ty and Quai get into how gender shaped them growing up and how they’ve been unlearning it ever since. They share what it looked like to move from performing masculinity or femininity to actually asking: Who am I when I’m not trying to prove anything?
This conversation is thoughtful, a little tender, a little funny, and full of honesty. A reminder that identity isn’t about choosing one side. It’s about making room for your full self.
