“Ask a Therapist”: How to get your teen to talk, How to navigate a parent's addiction, & When parents can't quit battling with each other.

Today we are revisiting our fan favorite 'Ask a Therapist' format, where we tackle the most asked questions sent in from YOU parents.

Join our real expert Q&A with Dr. Skinner-- over the primary dilemmas you too are likely facing right now as a parent.

David Brooks once admitted,

“I don’t really know of many happy marriages. I know a lot of marriages where parents love their kids.”

Dr. Skinner similarly acknowledges it’s hard to keep the garden of marriage nurtured.  It doesn’t water itself even if, or especially if,  you both are involved with your busy family life.

Furthermore, conflict in parenting styles can also lead to further detachment from your partner. However, vocalizing a focused and united purpose in your desire for your kids happiness and growth, can unite you as a couple and bring you closer despite occupying different approaches.

Dr. Skinner tackles how to get teens to open up!

He says,

“There are types of things and conversations that are not easy for us to have as parents and it's not easy for our children to have with us.

So sometimes that's an earned conversation.   It takes time to develop that kind of nurturing, that kind of interaction where again, the concept of all human connection is safety.   I have to feel safe enough in your presence that you're not going to X, Y, Z, that you're going to hear me, that you're going to listen, that you still care, that you're still going to love me. I  think we often hold back because we're afraid of being judged.   We're afraid that our parents are going to judge us. They need to know that we are with them and we want to help them. We care."

The last question is a tough one– addressing family secrets, specifically hidden parental porn use. However, Dr. Skinner gives us a beautiful and hopeful response on how to address some of the weightier issues within our family relationships.

Stay tuned for the whole episode– It’s worth it!.

You and us--

We got this,
