Fertility Journeys

Infertility is a disease that impacts 1 in 8 couples. 1 in 4 women have experienced a miscarriage. Over 8 million babies have been born worldwide via In vitro fertilization. When these statistics are the most common ones shared in relation to the disease, it is understandable why fertility issues are often only associated only with the ability to carry a child, as opposed to the mental and physical well-being of the woman that can carry beyond the realm of pregnancy. Infertility can impact every aspect of a person’s life, so it is easy to feel overwhelmed, lost or alone. While research has shown that women with infertility have similar levels of stress, anxiety and depression as women with cancer and heart disease, as a medical provider and women’s health expert, I would like to help forge connections and share stories that help demystify diagnosis and support those who often feel unseen. Our mission is to support you on your fertility journey, while optimizing wellness and health using integrative techniques. Integrative medicine takes into consideration all factors that influence health and wellness: the mind, body, spirit and community. It combines alternative and conventional methods to facilitate the body‘s own healing response. You will hear from experts who specialize in mental health, mind-body, nutrition, acupuncture, environmental toxins and more to help educate you on the things that not only will support optimal fertility but achieve optimal wellness for you. While infertility is not uncommon, it can be terribly isolating and lonely because many stories are not told. The podcast also features diverse stories of women who have navigated infertility helping to break the silence and stigma that surrounds infertility.

Dr. Jenna Hua- Testing Your Environmental Toxin Exposure
This episode of Fertility Journeys features Dr. Shala Salem,M.D.,  interviewing Dr. Jenna Hua, RD, MPH, Ph.D. An environmental health scientist and dietitian by training, Jenna is passionate about the environment, public health and everything food. Frustrated by the lack of data for how harmful chemicals (like BPA, phthalates and parabens) from plastics and everyday products affect our health and clinical outcomes, and the absence of personalized approach to mitigate harmful chemical exposures, Jenna is set out on a mission to change these. From there, she founded Million Marker, a health-tech startup dedicated to empower everyone with the data and tools to determine how the products they use, the food they eat, and the water they drink negatively or positively influence their health. Million Marker helps people understand what chemicals are inside of them—and then provides simple solutions for quickly reducing harmful chemicals through mail-in test kits, lifestyle audits, product recommendations, and counseling. "Our mission is to get one million people to take our test—building the first ever dataset on how environmental exposures like microplastics impact our bodies. Starting with a few markers of harmful exposures, our vision is to discover over a MILLION MARKERS to inform and improve individual health and to advance precision medicine." Jenna holds a BS in Nutrition and an MPH and PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from UC Berkeley. Jenna also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in chronic disease prevention at Stanford Medicine.  Japanese claypot mentioned in the interview:  Toiro.  Website : www.millionmarker.com IG @million_marker
