For over thirty years, Dr Phil Hammond juggled jobs as an NHS doctor, Private Eye journalist, BBC broadcaster and comedian. He has since retired from the NHS, having worked in primary care, sexual health and paediatric chronic fatigue, and was also a lecturer in medical communication at the University of Bristol and the University of Birmingham. As a comedian, he appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2022 in two shows: ‘Dr Hammond’s Covid Inquiry’ and ‘How I Ruined Medicine… for the better’. His coverage of the pandemic in Private Eye was highly praised, and a book of the columns – Dr Hammond’s Covid Casebook – is a Sunday Times bestseller. He is a patron of the Doctors’ Support Network and the Herpes Viruses Association, and he is the ‘honorary health secretary’ for the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine.
