Welcome back to Equalised Sound, bought to you by SIREN in collaboration with the Alliance for Women Film Composers.
On today’s episode, hosts Siân and Alice from SIREN Music Supervision are joined by Ayanna Witter Johnson (singer, songwriter, pianist and cellist), Jessie Marcella (artist, producer, composer, DJ) and Jo Hill (singer-songwriter).
In this inspiring conversation, we discuss their journeys into music so far, how their ‘failures’ have got them where they are today, and how to be authentic and stay true to your artistry in an industry full of demands.
Plus, we get their thoughts on the pressures facings artists and songwriters in today’s industry… Is genre an unhelpful pigeon hole or creative inspiration? Should we draw a bigger line between artist and content creator? Are the most fans to be found in a live audience or in the algorithm?
Make sure you give Ayanna, Jessie and Jo’s music a listen!

This special edition of Equalised Sound is bought to you in collaboration with the Alliance for Women Film Composers. Join our hosts Siân Rogers (Music Supervisor at SIREN) and Jenna Fentimen (Head of Creative at Manners McDade, AWFC board) in conversation with TAWIAH (artist, singer, songwriter, film and TV composer), Hannah Vasanth (producer, songwriter and musician) and Daisy Coole (composer, saxophonist, AWFC board), as we discuss how we define ourselves throughout our careers.
Careers in music are rarely linear, but as a society that loves to label and define, how can we explore the true extent of our capabilities and creativity if we never step out of the first box we are put in. What do we need to do to allow ourselves, and each other, the space for learning and growth into other areas, skills, or disciplines?
We hope this conversation inspires and reassures anyone in music, or anyone looking to get into music, that going down one path won’t prevent you from exploring others too.
