Empathy is harder than you think. But there is a secret.

Empathy is one of the most talked about subjects within Emotional Intelligence. 

How do we get to Empathy? One does not just arrive at Empathy. There are levels of deeper communication. Even if this is a short encounter, the relationship can still be meaningful. 


The secret here is active listening.


Here is an example of levels of communication. The further you move down, the greater the use of your Emotional Intelligence and likelihood of creating positive relationships.  

Hearing  You hear sounds. 

Listening Something you hear has your attention, and you begin to tune in and pay attention.

Understanding cognitively, you are putting it all together 

Empathy Making a genuine connection with someone on a level that you both feel 

Compassion The connection is so genuine it moves you to action.
