Wayne McCullough's historic WBC Bantamweight title win, which occurred 30 years ago, is being celebrated as a significant milestone in Irish boxing.On July 30, 1995, McCullough defeated Yasuei Yakushiji in Japan to become the first Irish WBC world champion, a victory often cited as one of the greatest away wins in Irish boxing - The win was not just a personal triumph for McCullough, but it also resonated deeply with the Irish boxing community and the wider public.Wayne is joined in here by his team mate from 1988 Soul Olympics Kevin McBride the heavyweight who went on to rock the boxing world by beating Mike Tyson in 2005. Scottish featherweight Alex Arthur who won British, Commonwealth, European AND WBO world titles - who was also trained later in his career by McCullough. Belfast journalist Neil Loughran of The Irish News talks about the impact of Wayne’s incredible career on a country that was in a very different state at that time - boxing often offered great relief from the troubles.
