JB Promotion cards are becoming a regular event on the Irish sports scene - and each event is bringing new levels of entertainment. The most recent fight night ‘A New Dawn’ brought us back to the National Sradium - the home of Irish boxing and had a little bit of everything.

There’s no doubt 2025 has been an action packed one for Irish boxing - the next big show is Jay Byrne Promotios ‘A New Dawn’ on Friday 10th October at the National Stadium.
Top of the bill is a battle of 2 pals Paul Ryan v Edward Donovan which promises to be a tremendous match. There’s a huge Cork v Kerry derby when Cathal Crowley takes on Kevin Cronin. Daniel O’Sullivan will face Dean Walsh, Shaun Murray v Peter Carr.
Podge Collins, Glen Lynch, Kelsey Leonard & John Carlenter plus many more will feature a stacked card wirh 17 fights.

What a fortnight it’s been, 2 colossal boxing shows featuring Lewis Crocker, Paddy Donovan and Mick Conlan with the very best of Irish boxers on the undercards.
Sadly - it has been somewhat overshadowed by the tragic death of Ricky Hatton. In this episode 243 Ian and AL visit O'Rourke's Gym as another of Ireland's top welterweights Ryan O'Rourke prepares for his next outing in New York. We catch up with Mancunian coach Steven O'Rourke to chat about the untimely passing of Ricky which brings back some haunting memories of his own fighter John Cooney who tragically lost his life last February,.

The first time these two welterweights boxed in Belfast, Donovan was so dominant that his biggest threat was simply getting carried away and finishing matters prematurely by unfair means. The only way he could lose, it seemed, was if he continued to foul Crocker and ended up getting disqualified.
This time around Donovan and Crocker would renew acquaintances in front of a 20,000 capacity at Windsor Park – with the IBF Welterweight World Title on the line.

There are no words that can summarise the life of Ricky Hatton - simply because he managed to achieve SO much in his life. He was a multi weight world champion, a darling of the public, a friend, a coach, son, a Dad and a Grandad. He was a man who never forgot where he came from even at the hight of his fame and world domination Ricky Hatton always made time for his fans - for the people who saw him as one of their own.
From a boxing standpoint it will take a long long time to heal this wound - if ever. This episode is one to cherish, one I'll never forget. The morning I spoke to Ricky 'The Hitman' Hatton.
Michael Conlan's recent Dublin debut against Jack Bateston promised much and delivered more. A huge card of boxing for an Irish fanbase that have been starved of these shows over the years. Is Conlan the man to return these regular big shows to an adoring Irish fanbase? Will he keep his word and fight the remainder of his career south of the border? Time will tell.

Mick Conlan, the fighting pride of Ireland has recently reshaped his team under the Wasserman Boxing promotion and is 3 weeks out from his Dublin debut on September 5th against Leeds Jack Bateson. Having taken over year out in 2024 he completely rebuilt his coaching team, promotion team and now manages his own career along with top fighters like Janade Boston, Dean Walsh & Kevin Cronin. Mick talks openly about his personal dificulties during that time out, about training for and running a marathon and the potential of a future Dublin show alongside fomer teammate Katie Taylor.

Wayne McCullough's historic WBC Bantamweight title win, which occurred 30 years ago, is being celebrated as a significant milestone in Irish boxing.On July 30, 1995, McCullough defeated Yasuei Yakushiji in Japan to become the first Irish WBC world champion, a victory often cited as one of the greatest away wins in Irish boxing - The win was not just a personal triumph for McCullough, but it also resonated deeply with the Irish boxing community and the wider public.Wayne is joined in here by his team mate from 1988 Soul Olympics Kevin McBride the heavyweight who went on to rock the boxing world by beating Mike Tyson in 2005. Scottish featherweight Alex Arthur who won British, Commonwealth, European AND WBO world titles - who was also trained later in his career by McCullough. Belfast journalist Neil Loughran of The Irish News talks about the impact of Wayne’s incredible career on a country that was in a very different state at that time - boxing often offered great relief from the troubles. The lads return with a quick catchup and look back over the last couple of weeks boxing. Katie Taylor once again outclassed and outboxed Amanda Serrano to draw a line under their rivalry - winning even more empathetically this time around.
And despite all the ‘expert’ opinion predicting that Usyk is “too old” or “showing signs of aging - he delivered a career best performance to destroy Daniel Dubois & become the unified and undisputed world heavyweight champion for the SECOND TIME.

It’s a while since we had a fight card that included so much for so many as the upcoming JB Promotions ‘A Night of Champions at the iconic home of Irish boxing. In this episode, no 233 we welcome Mayo Middleweight Eoghan Lavin. As an amateur he won 9 Irish titles. Since turning professional he is signed to Anthony Joshua’s 258 Management & is promoted by Frank Warren’s Queensbury Promotions.
This Saturday night he returns to the National Stadium, where he had so much success to take his record to 5-0.

A total of 76 wins and 5 losses.

When John Cooney began his professional career 4 years ago we knew he was special. AL says in this episode “I never needed to hear or see John to know he was in the room” - that goes a long way to describing the presence he had.
He won the BBBoC Super Featherweight Celtic title in just his 10th professional fight, stopping Liam Gaynor in the first round on the Taylor V Cameron undercard & announced himself to the boxing powers.
We fully expected to follow John’s career all the way to the very top of the game - so to have to look back over his life & career cut WAY too short is a hurt too hard for words.
