Looking at Perfectionism in a New Light with Katherine Morgan Schafler

On this episode of Emotionally Unfucked, we have the amazing Katherine Morgan Schafler join us for a conversation on perfectionism. Katherine is a psychotherapist, writer, speaker, and former onsite therapist at Google. She earned degrees and trained at UC Berkeley, and Columbia University with postgraduate certification from the Association for Spirituality and Psychotherapy in New York City. She works with women who self-identify as perfectionists

This episode isn’t about “overcoming” perfectionism as you’ve probably heard before. Katherine has a beautiful view of perfectionism and how that she also shares in her book The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control. Perfectionism is not a mental illness, and treating it as one is causing countless people, mostly women, to suffer needlessly. If you’ve ever thought of yourself as a perfectionist this episode will be incredibly powerful for you to listen to.

We cover:

  • The five types of perfectionists Katherine identifies in her book

  • How Katherine’s health shaped her own view on perfectionism

  • Why perfectionism isn’t inherently bad or something that needs to be “fixed”

  • The difference in the need for power and control when it comes to perfectionism
