The traditional view of organizations is to treat it as a machine. Inputs are fed into the system and predictable outputs are expected on the other side. To a certain degree, this works. However, there is a cost to this paradigm. Is it a financial cost? While in most cases the answer is "no," what is certain is that in all cases there is an opportunity cost. Adopting the mechanistic view of organizations means relinquishing the opportunity to see the organization as a vehicle for community development. In other words, changing your paradigm will empower a business to do well and to do good.
