49. Detecting Bacterial Endotoxin by Harnessing PAMP-Triggered Immunity - Aravid Krishnan
Celebrating the pod’s 2nd birthday with a new episode and with expressing a deep appreciation for all the listeners who have followed DTS - some from the very beginning! 💙Aravind Krishnan @aravind.m.krishnan is a young researcher in Bio- and Genetic Engineering, Plant and Computational Biology. He devised a new system that harnesses the response of the Arabidopsis thaliana plant to bacterial endotoxins and a method of analyzing the expression of the FRK1 gene. His genetically engineered plants luminesce at different intensities based on the applied endotoxin concentration. 🧬The system is environmentally friendly and substantially cheaper than the current method. For his project he was awarded: Regeneron STS (Science Talent Search) Scholar, National JSHS Finalist, InspoScience IRIC Bronze Medal, TKS Special Award @theksociety , at 2021 Regeneron ISEF: @society4science Third Award in Plant Sciences, and Second Award from Serving Society Through Science. 🏆He also did a research project related to COVID-19. His team used computational molecular and protein modelling methods to analyze the binding of various ligands with key functional proteins from SARS-CoV-2. 🦠They identified six candidate molecules and even designed two novel molecules that show high efficacy in silico to be further investigated and developed into COVID-19 treatment medications. Aside from his research work, he leads Simply Neuroscience @simplyneuroscience with Chinmayi Balusu (who was also on the pod 😉 @chinmayi_balusu ). They are an international organization focused on interdisciplinary neuroscience and psychology education, outreach, and awareness. 🧠 Within his community, Aravind leads a research program for high schoolers where he teaches microbiology and bioinformatics and guides students in conducting research!
