45. The Revolutionary Potential and Ethical Challenges of Biotechnology - Rahil Samlal
This episode officially marks the first conversation of 2021! 🌠 It's a new year, but the guests are still dropping the STEM! So did Rahil Samlal @rahilsamlal in this episode, researcher in Microbiology and an undergraduate student at the University of Pretoria studying Microbiology and Genetics. @universityofpretoria 🇿🇦 As the winner of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientist @eskom_expo , while receiving the University of Stellenbosch Bursary for top creative project and University of Pretoria Dr Derek Gray Award, he was a finalist at Intel ISEF 2018 @society4science , a participant at SIYSS (Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar @siyss_stockholm ) 2018, attending the Nobel Prize Week and Ceremony! 🌟His research focused on using biotechnology to develop cheaper and novel technologies to help fight lower quality of living in Africa and the rest of the world. He also investigated an alternative treatment protocol for commonly occurring pathogenic bacteria. Currently, Rahil is part of SynthEthics @synthethics_initiative as Ambassador of South Africa since he enjoys reviewing biotechnology's dynamic field with the rigorous input of ethical and philosophical discussions. 🧬⚖️ His passion is to bring science education to the general public, and it's not his first time grabbing the mic, since Rahil is also the co-host of the Dialogue Podcast. @dialogue_podcast LINK IN BIO • Tune in to discover more.
