41. Deep CNN to Detect Antibiotic Resistance Polymorphisms in S. Pneumoniae DNA - Khushi Parikh
This episode is one of a kind, the result of a fruitful partnership with INSPO Science Canada! 🇨🇦🌟 InspoScience Canada is a non-profit organization that provides avenues for aspiring young scientists in Canada to feature their research at global research and innovation fairs. 🏆 INSPO organized NORTH AMERICA'S PREMIER ONLINE SCIENCE FAIR: 30K dollars in awards, 2M+ dollars in scholarships, 15 internship and lab opportunities, and 3 fully-paid trips to compete in Korea, Spain and New York. 🌍The evaluators were from Harvard, University of Toronto, IBM, sponsored awards from NOKIA, Scotiabank, and ... the People's Choice Award from Drop the STEM! 😉
The winner is Khushi Parikh, 🙌 who also received Silver Medal, 18,000 USD entrance scholarship to the Rochester Institute of Technology and a 500 dollars bursary to the TKS 2020-21 session. This inspiring roboticist designed a deep neural network to detect antimicrobial resistance in S . p neumoniae. 🧫🔬Her study presents a proof of concept for the application of CNNs to detect AMR polymorphisms in bacterial DNA, which can be extended to other pathogen-antibiotic combinations in the future. 🧬She also designed a convolutional network to diagnose Lyme Disease previously, received Silver Prize in Genius Olympiad, the Petit Family Foundation's Women in Science Award and won Best Policy Paper, Diplomat and Delegate at ASU Model UNConference. Khushi tutors struggling students and teaches kids how to build autonomous robots. 💡
