Below is the story outline I made prior to this episode. We used almost none of it.
Baby Bones
-expectant parents live near an abandoned house that becomes inhabited by cultists who are trying to incarnate their deity on Earth
-the couple become targets of the cultists, resulting in a physical and magical assault that causes their son to be born a literal living skeleton
-the cultists flee
-the family moves because of the trauma, and to avoid further attacks, but stay in the area because the small town medical office agrees to keep their secret and treat their son as best they can
-they raise their son in isolation, but he longs for a normal life and friends
-in his adolescence, he befriends a local kid and (while disguised) has regular teenage experiences
-in another town, the cultists abduct a teenage boy who is just animated skin
-one of his friends’ parent(s) recognize the skeleton boy, despite his disguise, and inform their fellow cultists of his whereabouts (his friend’s parent(s) is/are in the cult)
-the cultists raid a party in the woods, but are unprepared for the task of abducting a kid who is not isolated, resulting in a significant scuffle
-the cultists kill the boy’s best friend and abduct him
-the boy’s friends attempt to rescue the boy
-the boy’s parents team up with the sheriff to find their missing son
-the cultists try to merge the boy with other living organs (i.e., other kids they’ve cursed) to create their god
-the boys friends raid the cultists compound, followed by the sheriff and the boy’s parents
-the living brain kid communicates with the skeleton boy telepathically, convincing him to merge so they can use their combined might to defeat the cultists
-there is a major conflict between the cultists and everyone else (including the organ kids who have all merged into one being) resulting in the defeat of the cultists
-the deity attempts to take control of the body, but the component organ kids fight back and defeat it
-in its final moments, the deity takes back its animating energy, leaving the merged organ kids inert and seemingly dead.
-all the friends and families of the kids who make up the deity’s would-be body attend the organ kids’ collective funeral
-in the grave, in the body, we see that skeleton boy now is with the other organ kids—who are now his friends, and he is having something approximating a teenage experience in some internal simulation of a shared environment or hang out spot
