Homecoming by Lizz Weis

Darden, brotherErwyn, fatherCamron, Cam, Alban, townEmberlynn, Em, narrator

This is an interesting story about a family waiting for their son to return home after the War of the Lance. His name is Darden, and his sister Emberlynn has a secret pet she is keeping in the barn. Darden has PTSD from the war and his sister invites him to visit her pet. It turns out to be a black dragon wyrmling! Darden tries to kill it but it is saved by Emberlynn as she runs off into the wilderness. She encounters a giant cave spider’s lair which begins to stalk her. Darden chases after his sister, sure the wyrmling is going to kill her as he witnessed dragons decimate entire towns in the war. When he finally catches up to Emberlynn, she is wrapped up in the spider's web. He begins trying to rescue her, but the spider pins him down and the wyrmling begins to lurk from the distance. It attacks the spider, forcing it to retreat, and frees the two from the webs as Darden finishes the spider off with his sword. He convinces Emberlynn to leave the wyrmling here and they return home with the intention of visiting it. The black dragon wyrmling is intelligent and begins to feed on the humanoid victims of the cave spider. It plans on returning to town when it’s larger to enslave and feed on the silly humans there. This story is great as it presents the wyrmling as an innocent pet, but then showcases its evil intentions that are hidden from its caretaker while it is small and vulnerable. I really like the direction this took, but I wish they would have taken more time to explore the PTSD of Darden, like him freezing in the battle or going crazy momentarily with the Cave Spider.

What if the Kingpriest of Istar had never fallen? What if the gods had never turned away from Krynn? And what if the fiery mountain never came—and the Empire of Istar stood unbroken?

Intro

Welcome to another DragonLance Saga episode. My name is Adam and today I am going to talk about the alternate timeline Istar Triumphant. I would like to take a moment and thank the DLSaga YouTube members and Patreon patrons, and invite you to consider becoming a member or patron by following the links in the description below. Moore’s short story There Is Another Shore, You Know, Upon the Other Side from the third Dragons anthology, Dragons of Chaos for this information. Discussion

In this alternate timeline… the Kingpriest succeeded. He conquered not only the world… but the gods themselves.

This timeline begins when the Graygem of Gargath fell into the Kingpriest’s hands, everything changed. He no longer sought to cleanse evil—he sought to own the light. The gem, having trapped Chaos itself, gave him the power to command divinity. He bound the True Gods in mortal form, stripped them of their thrones, and declared himself the Godking of Krynn.

Under his  rule, Istar became the center of all creation… and all who lived upon Krynn bowed to him. The world that followed was not destroyed by fire—it was consumed by order. From the shores of Ergoth to the deserts of Khur, every kingdom became a Dominion of Istar. The banners of the blue eye and golden sun fluttered above every city. Laws of purity replaced laws of freedom.

The Knights of Solamnia rebelled, but were driven down and broken by the magic of the Godking’s priests. They served as paladins of the Godking’s peace—hunting wizards, heretics, and any who defied Istar’s perfection. Everywhere, the Eye gazed down—the symbol of the Godking’s sight and judgment. It was stamped into coins, carved above doorways, branded into slaves. Even the heavens bore his mark.

Where once three moons governed the flow of magic, now there was only one: a massive, blue-tinted orb that filled the night sky. At its center glowed a dark pupil—the living eye of the Godking himself. To the faithful, this world seemed pure and bright. But beneath its light, there was no compassion—only fear.

The Years of Hunting began with the proclamation that the impure must be erased. Kender were the first to fall—called “the children of chaos.” Goblins, ogres, minotaurs, and gnomes followed. Each race was hunted to extinction in the name of divine order. The elves fared only slightly better. Deemed “close to perfection,” they were allowed to live—but only as favored servants of Istar’s priests, their ancient pride chained to the service of tyranny.

Magic itself was broken. When the moons merged, the Orders of High Sorcery lost their gods and their power. The towers were seized, their knowledge burned. The Tower of High Sorcery in Palanthas was reclaimed—its blackened stones restored to white marble, its Shoikan Grove made a garden of light.

Game Setup

Last time on Tyranny of Dragons: The heroes reconvened at the Last Inn on the Left and after Elowyn was verbally abused by the barkeep, the heroes were asked to leave when Gunnar threatened him. They slept outside for the night to avoid the constable and when the caravan arrived the following morning, they all reentered Deepdel to join the caravan. They assisted Ackyn Selebon supply customers and met Garrick Bloodmoor, another Legionnaire who joined their party. They could not locate Henry, but took his disappearance as on-brand. They each signed up with merchants on the caravan and left Deepdel for good. On the road they experienced terrible weather. They were beset upon by two Dopplegangers in the form of busty women who ultimately killed Achreny Ulyeltin, a human merchant, and they were all fingered for the murder. K’thriss convinced the caravan that they were not guilty and they all gave up the search for the night due to inclement weather. The next morning the caravan was surrounded by fungus from an immense mycelium. They moaned in pain and emitted a puff of black spores when stepped on, affecting the psychology of those hearing it and in range to inhale the spores. The effect faded but the emotional scars remain. On the fifth day of the journey, they saw a noble abusing his horse and intervened inadvertently killing the man. Will the heroes get away with this murder, or correct the error?

Review

1. Eyes of Chaos by Sue Weinlein Cook

This story was about a blue dragon named Clamor who suffered from PTSD after fighting with her late rider Sir Jerne Stormcrown in the Abyss during the Chaos War. Jerne leaped off her back to attack a Daemon Warrior atop his Fire Dragon and they both plummeted to their doom. Clamor fought the Fire Dragon, after it clawed her leg, letting chaos seep into her and corrupt her. She witnessed the end of the Chaos War and flew back to the Kharolis mountains, tormenting the elves and ogres around there. Going village to village taking souls to placate the chaos that was poisoning her. She felt tremendous guilt about her rider's death and wanted to bring honor to his name in his absence, but inside she knew it was not honorable. In the end she let death come to her as elves and ogres teamed up to kill her. She saw Jerne in a river calling to her, and she went to him in death. As I write this is incredibly more sad than reading the story was, and knowing about the War of Souls that wasn’t a thing when this was originally written, I know her soul will not find Jerne in death, and that is even sadder. But I enjoyed the short story none-the-less.

2. The Noble Folly by Mark Anthony

This was another sad tale. A Knight of Takhisis named Kal was headed up to meet the dragon of redstone to regain his glory after the vision left him with the gods at the end of the Chaos War. he came upon a Knight of the Rose named Brinon who was blinded and was also headed up to the dragon of redstone to slay it, proving his honor and that would bring Paladine back. The knights share a repast and Kal left to find the dragon. On his way up the mountain he loosed a boulder which crushed his leg and started an avalanche. Brinon found him and helped him. They decided to go up the mountain together. Kal would try to join with the Dragon and if he refused Brinon would slay it. It seemed the blind and crippled needed each other. One the way up the mountain we learned about their backstories. Kal was a beggar before Ariakan and he is afraid that he never had honor, just the vision, and without that, only the memories of those he killed. Brinon ran from battle and only saw the dead and horrors of war in his eyes so he blinded himself. They finally reached the summit and began attacking what they believed was the dragon only to have it revealed as a stone formation that looked like a dragon from a distance. Then Brinon believed he needed to fight Kal for his honor and Kal wanted none of it. Brinon eventually killed himself by using Kal inadvertently and thanked him. Kal walked away with the thought that without the gods, we were left to our own devices, to suffer or find meaning as we will. Its a devastating idea, yet the reality I believe we all share in real life. We are what we choose to be as The Iron Giant film tells us. And I personally love the notion.

Discussion

Welcome, honored guest, to the Tower of Wayreth. A figure approaches you dressed in a silver-robe, holding a mahogany staff tipped with a bronze dragon’s claw clutching a glowing crystal. He bows slightly and says, I am the Master of the Tower, the living will of High Sorcery. It seems the forest of Wayreth has found you, and its enchanted paths have led you to our gates. Let me guide you through the inner sanctums of this ancient citadel, a place where magic breathes in every stone. Prepare yourself—the Tower is alive, and its corridors are vast and ever-shifting. Stand Close.

We stand before the silver-and-gold gates, delicate as spider silk yet impervious to any siege. They glide open soundlessly, revealing the courtyard of smooth gray flagstones, polished by unseen steps. The air hums with residual magic—faint echoes of sending-spells ripple like whispers, and you may sense unseen eyes watching from the ether. The courtyard feels both empty and teeming, as if invisible mages pass just beyond your sight, their robes brushing the air.

First, we enter the Fore Tower, a slender spire that guards the threshold. Its anteroom is intimate, its walls draped with tapestries depicting the three moons in their celestial dance, woven with threads that shimmer under arcane light. A mosaic floor swirls with patterns of stars, subtly shifting as if charting the heavens in real-time. Oak tables bear silver trays that magically replenish with fruits, bread, and crystal decanters of elven wine for visitors. Above, guest suites offer velvet-draped beds, enchanted hearths that burn with smokeless azure flames, and orbs for scrying the Testing Levels. Non-mages linger here, forbidden to venture deeper, where only the initiated tread.

Now, step into the heart of the Tower: the twin obsidian cones, each 250 feet tall, their glassy surfaces etched with silver and crimson runes that pulse faintly under Solinari and Lunitari’s light. From outside, they seem to lean, an illusion to unsettle intruders, but within, they stand unyielding. The interior defies logic—corridors stretch impossibly far, rooms multiply beyond the Tower’s apparent size, a testament to spatial enchantments woven at its founding.

In the North Tower, we ascend to the Highmage’s quarters, where Palin Majere reigned. His study is a circular chamber with walls of polished obsidian, reflecting candlelight like a starry void. Shelves groan under tomes bound in dragonhide, their titles glowing faintly.

Review

1. Dream of the Namer by Michael Williams

This was an interesting poem about the author, waking in dreams to see the coming of the Queen of Darkness in her assault against Huma and his ‘impossible’ lance. I am not sure if the poem is meant to be from any one individual, or a generic retelling of the event as attributed to the Namer, which could be the authors or gods, who are truly one in the same. In any case, it was nice returning to Michael Williams’ poetry after such a long absence, as overly descriptive as it may be, it is familiar and comfortable.

2. People of the Dragon by Mark Anthony

This was a great story about a white wizard who fled the Tower of Daltifoth before its fall. This is set five years later where he is living like a hermit, as the Kingpriest declared all wizards evil. He is called by the townsfolk to look at bones to see if they are an ill omen. He studies them and casts a spell to see the past. He sees two people meeting and falling in love. One from the mountain Dragonmere, and the other from the valley. He is not meant to fall in love, but has and gives her a bracelet. They fall in love and have a child. Ultimately the mother dies in the child's youth and the man is blamed for it. THe hermit decides to return to his home to continue studying this and then travels up to the mountain finding more bones. He uses his magic and learns the man was a silver dragon who brought the girl, presumably also a dragon to the clan in hiding, 500 years after the Third Dragon War. He battles the leader to ensure she can go with them as they leave the mountain, but both die in the fight. The daughter is seen flying away. The hermit returns to his hut to find it on fire and he is thrown to the fire by the townsfolk for being a wizard. He dons the bracelet and turns into a silver dragon, fleeing his death, and headed to a new life. Again, it was a great story about love and secrets, something I genuinely enjoyed.

3. Quarry by Adam Lesh

This was a great story with a wonderful twist that was clearly coming, but wonderful when revealed. A dragon wakes as a thief is stealing a sword from his hoard. He then goes on a chase through his lair, the mountain and other caves and forest trying to find and kill the thief. He is guided by his ability to read the thief's mind, and ultimately is led into an ambush and trapped by the thief. He is revealed to be a Dragonsbane, a dragon hunter in the Third Dragon War. They were a secret group who hunted and killed dragons making them look like accidents. Again, you knew that a twist was coming as this half-elf thief continued to evade this awesome red dragon, but it was great to be in the dragon's head, feel his certainty, then have the rug pulled out from under him and have the half-elf explain who and what he was.

Game Setup

Arack, the Master of the Games: Hear ye! Hear ye! Citizens, nobles, warriors, and faithful of the grand Lordcity of Istar — welcome to the great arenas of the mighty School of the Games! Here, beneath the watchful statues of champions and amid the roar of the crowd, we honour our glorious Kingpriest of Istar and the splendour of our empire!

Know this: the Kingpriest’s banner flies high above all, his justice and strength celebrated throughout the lands. He has brought peace, order and renown to Istar, and it is in his honour that these contests are held. And the School of the Games is no mere spectacle — it is an institution of challenge, of blood and thunder and triumph, famed across the Holy Empire for proving who among mortals may claim victory, who among fighters may claim the mantle of legend.

Now! In tribute to the Kingpriest and in celebration of our eternal city, we bring forth the combatants of this day — worthy men and women whose names will echo in the halls of Istar and beyond!

First, stepping into the glow of the torches and into the roar of the crowd: Tharok “Iron-Maul” Varn, hailing from the northern forges of the Empire — his hammer arm unmatched, his resolve unyielding.

And opposite him: Selene “Shadow-Spear” Maris, the fleet-footed warrior of the southern sands, swift of blade, cunning of mind.

May their clash bring honour to their sponsors, may their courage uplift our city, and may the Kingpriest gaze upon their deeds with pride!

Let the crowd rise. Let cheers thunder off these mighty walls. Let the glory of Istar shine forth in every strike, every block, every cry of triumph!

On the count of three: One! Two! Three! Let the games begin!

He grew up in the court of the Speaker of the Sun, groomed from birth to assume his father’s mantle. Among his sibling relations were Gilthanas Kanan and his sister Lauralanthalasa Kanan.

From his youth Porthios exhibited the elven traits of proud bearing, physical grace, and martial training—but also a measure of arrogance. He is unusually tall for his people, fair-skinned, blond-haired and hazel-eyed, with a “haughty, severe expression.” One early incident highlights his competitive nature: while Tanis Half-Elven was a guest in the court, Porthios disliked the half-elf. Tanis challenged him to archery and won the contest; then challenged him to a fist-fight and Porthios lost. This moment helped shape Porthios’ view of outsiders and his role among his people.

When the War of the Lance erupted, Porthios emerged as a battlefield leader of elven guerrilla forces defending Qualinesti from the Dragonarmies. He assisted with the migration of his people from Qualinesti to Southern Ergoth, and participated in the Whitestone Councils called by the allied races. Notably, Porthios’ brother Gilthanas fought alongside humans in the allied armies—something the proud elf prince viewed with disdain. In those years Porthios honed both his martial and leadership skills in a time of existential crisis for his people.

Following the War of the Lance and the liberation of Silvanesti from the Nightmare, Porthios escorted Silvanesti’s exiles aboard his ship Bright Sun in 353 AC. After his father’s death in 356 AC, Porthios ascended to become Speaker of the Sun for the Qualinesti elves. In 362 AC he married Alhana Starbreeze of Silvanesti, linking the two elven kingdoms in an arranged marriage that gradually became true love. Their union symbolized hope for a united elven future.

Porthios’ greatest ambition was not merely to lead Qualinesti, but to reshape the future of the elven nations. In 382 AC he led the combined elven forces in the cleansing of Silvanesti’s southern region, defeating the remaining green dragon forces there. However,

Game Setup

Last time on Tyranny of Dragons: The heroes returned to A Pair of Black Antlers tavern in the morning to walk into a Legion of Steel indoctrination ceremony. They were all sworn into service by their Akroatis Leosin Erlanthar. After reciting The Legacy, these new Legion Scouts were sent to find Ackyn Selebon in Deepdel. He was to assist them in finding work in the coming caravan that the cultists are believed to be on. They learned from Leosin that the Knights of Solamnia, the Legion of Steel, and even the Order of Chislev are beginning to work together to discover more of this cultist threat. They are to find out where the caravan and cultists are headed. And what the cult plans on doing with the treasure. The journey there was filled with misadventure. They came across priests of Morgian, who they aided. When they traversed the vast Vingaard mountains, they discovered a wounded Pegasus and healed it, while defending it from a wandering ogre. While in Deepdel they shared some local misadventure, paying off Leosin’s debt to Ackyn, sharing a friendly rub with the constable from Ackyn, and enjoyed the local entertainment. Some of the party took up work to gain any information while others kept their ear to the ground. K’thriss was approached by a Kapak named Krag asking him to find him on the caravan and to join up with the cultists. He doesn’t want the dragon spawn to rule, and would prefer a Draconian leader. As the convoluted relationships of the world continue, and the heroes become exposed to its myriad of connections, will they ever be able to work out who is in control, and how to stop them, if the rumors are actually true?

About Dragonlance: Huma Before the Lance - The Dark Patrol
