God the Bestseller: How One Editor Transformed American Religion a Book at a Time by Stephen Prothero
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/601124 to listen full audiobooks. Title: God the Bestseller: How One Editor Transformed American Religion a Book at a Time Author: Stephen Prothero Narrator: Thom Rivera Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 12 hours 28 minutes Release date: March 14, 2023 Genres: Language Instruction Publisher's Summary: New York Times bestselling author and acclaimed religion scholar, Stephen Prothero, captures the compelling and unique saga of twentieth-century America on an identity quest through the eyes and books of one of the most influential editors of the day—a search, born of two world wars, for resolution of our divided identity as a Christian nation and a nation of religions. One summer evening in 1916 in Blanchester, Ohio, a sixteen-year-old farm boy was riding his horse past the town cemetery. The horse reared back and whinnied, and Eugene Exman saw God. For the rest of his life, he struggled to recreate that moment. Through a treasure of personal letters and papers, God, the Bestseller explores Exman’s personal quest. A journey that would lead him in the late 1920s to the Harper religious books department, which he turned during the Great Depression into a money-making juggernaut and the country’s top religion publisher.  Exman’s role in the shaping of American religion is undeniable. Here was a man who was ahead of his time and leading the rest of the nation through books on a spiritual exploration. Exman published bestsellers by the controversial preacher Harry Emerson Fosdick, the Catholic radical Dorothy Day, the Civil Rights pioneer Howard Thurman, and two Nobel laureates: Albert Schweitzer and Martin Luther King Jr. Exman did not just sit at a desk and read. In addition to his lifelong relationships with the most influential leaders of the day, Exman was on a spiritual journey of his own traversing the world in search of God. He founded a club of mystics, dropped acid in 1958, four years before Timothy Leary. And six years before The Beatles went to India, he found a guru there in 1962.  In the end, this is the story of the popularization of the religion of experience—a cultural story of modern America on a quest of its own. Exman helped to reimagine and remake American religion, turning the United States into a place where denominational boundaries are blurred, diversity is valued, and the only creed is that individual spiritual experience is the essence of religion. Rickford's life from his early years as the youngest of ten children in Guyana to his status as Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at Stanford, of the transformation of his identity from colored or mixed race in Guyana to black in the USA, and of his work championing Black Talk and its speakers. In this engaging memoir, Rickford recalls landmark events for his racial identity like being elected president of the Black Student Association at the U of California, Santa Cruz; learning from black expeditions to the South Carolina Sea Islands, Jamaica, Belize, and Ghana; and meeting or interviewing civil rights icons like Huey P. Newton, Rosa Parks, and South African Dennis Brutus. He worked with Rachel Jeantel, Trayvon Martin's friend and key witness in the trial of George Zimmerman for his murder. Zimmerman's exoneration sparked the Black Lives Matter movement. This is the account of a former director of African and African American studies whose work has increased our understanding of the richness of African American language and our awareness of the education and criminal justice challenges facing African-Americans. It is key for students and faculty in linguistics, mixed-race studies, African American studies, and social justice.

Most Hebrew word study books read like a dictionary, not really explaining the Hebrew words in light of specific Bible passages. Hebrew Word Study by Chaim Bentorah combines an in-depth look at the meanings of a variety of scriptural words and phrases in the original Hebrew with a down-to-earth application for our daily Christian experience. Guided by Chaim’s expertise in biblical languages, you will examine not just word definitions, but also the origins of words, their place in the culture and idioms of the day, and even their emotional context. With the author’s anecdotes and stories from the Bible and ancient Jewish literature, the meanings of these words and passages become even more vivid. Each of the ninety word studies in this book will encourage and strengthen you in your relationship with God. As you search the depths of God’s Word, you will see just how beautiful the Scriptures are, and most of all, you will see the beauty of God Himself and come to love Him all the more.

[Spanish] - Los desacuerdos de paz: Artículos y conversaciones (2012 - 2022) by Juan Gabriel Vásquez

Jack London. To build a fire. 'To Build a Fire' is a short story by American author Jack London. There are two versions of this story, one published in 1902 and the other in 1908. The story written in 1908 has become an often anthologized classic, while the 1902 story is less well known. The 1908 version is about an unnamed protagonist who ventures out in the subzero boreal forest of the Yukon Territory. He is followed by a native dog and is en route to visit his friends—ignoring warnings from an older man about the dangers of hiking alone in extreme cold. The protagonist underestimates the harsh conditions and slowly begins to freeze to death. After building one fire and leaving it to venture on in his journey he later on attempts to build another but fails. He slips into unconsciousness and dies of hypothermia... Edgar Allan Poe. The pit and the pendulum. 'The Pit and the Pendulum' is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe and first published in 1842 in the literary annual The Gift: A Christmas and New Year's Present for 1843. The story is about the torments endured by a prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition, though Poe skews historical facts. The narrator of the story describes his experience of being tortured. The story is especially effective at inspiring fear in the reader because of its heavy focus on the senses, such as sound, emphasizing its reality, unlike many of Poe's stories which are aided by the supernatural.

Barrie Narrator: Cora Mcdonald Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 6 hours 22 minutes Release date: May 20, 2022 Genres: Language Instruction Publisher's Summary: Who doesn't know a boy who didn't want to become an adult? Of course, everyone knows Peter Pan!.. After all, there is a child in everyone's soul who does not want to grow up for anything. This was especially felt by James Barry, who wrote in his novelistic work about a lost boy who did not want his parents to find him and raise him. And when Barry started writing for children… Children's works more fully reflected the main features of his work: reality is often mixed with fiction, and humor and comic situations are fanned with bright sadness. 'Peter Pan' is a story full of adventures and funny, and sometimes even dangerous, characters: sweet Wendy, her brothers John and Michael, the nanny dog Nana, the flighty fairy Ding-Dili-Don, as well as Lost Boys, the ferocious pirate Captain Hook-Hook, who instead of one hand has a terrible iron hook, red Indians, pirates and various animals. Peter and the fairy persuade Wendy and her brothers to escape to the land of Nowhere, where friends settle in an underground house, swim in the lagoon, experience many terrible adventures and return home after Peter's victory over the pirates. Unfortunately, all adventures, as well as childhood, come to an end sometime... Enjoy the fairy tale story read in the original, which glorified its author

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/591635 to listen full audiobooks.
