11 - Autism, Influences, & Work: Featuring Dr. Temple Grandin

In this episode, I'm discussing school discipline with the autism guru Dr. Temple Grandin. This is real talk about how to help students with disabilities be successful in life, not just school. Topics include:

(1) Considering alternative consequences

(2) Understanding problems kids are going through and how others influence them

(3) How giving kids jobs can help achieve long term success in changing behaviors around

Dr. Temple Grandin is is an American scientist and animal behaviorist. She is a prominent proponent for the humane treatment of livestock for slaughter and the author of more than 60 scientific papers on animal behavior. Grandin is a consultant to the livestock industry, where she offers advice on animal behavior, and is also an autism spokesperson. Grandin is one of the first individuals on the autism spectrum to document the insights she gained from her personal experience of autism. She is currently a faculty member with Animal Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Colorado State University.

In 2010, Time 100, an annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, named her in the "Heroes" category. She was the subject of the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning semi-biographical film Temple Grandin. Grandin has been an outspoken proponent of autism rights and neurodiversity movements. Temple is an author of many resources for education including The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across the Spectrum, The Outdoor Scientist: The Wonder of Observing the Natural World, The Autistic Brain, Calling All Minds: How to Think and Create Like and Inventor, and The Way I See It.
