Black lives matter.
Let’s take a bird’s eye view. This episode is a conversation Heather had with Elena Muslar. A few weeks ago, Elena wrote an automatic out of office email reply, stating she would be taking the day off to “rest and recharge from the extra work [she] continue[s] to put in as a Black employee … trying to dismantle issues of systemic racism from within the walls of a predominantly white institution.”
At the same time, she blocked off the entire day of Juneteenth in her work calendar, a virtual calendar that co-workers had access to, and wrote that she would be required to use vacation time in order to take Juneteenth off. Why is this the case, she asked, when Juneteenth is the oldest celebration that commemorates the end of slavery in America, and should simply be a national holiday?
During this conversation, Heather asks Elena about something that happened when they were co-workers five years ago. Instead, Elena invites Heather to unpack it herself.
So. What have you done to help black lives today?
