Track 6: Scaling Tech Ethics with Kat Zhou

In this episode, Kat is the creator of the <Design Ethically> project, which started as a framework for applying ethics to the design process and has now grown into a toolkit of speculative activities that help teams forecast the consequences of their products. Through her work with <Design Ethically>, she has spoken at events hosted by the European Parliament () and the US Federal Trade Commission (), as well as an assortment of tech conferences. She has also guest lectured at various institutions, such as Harvard University () and Duke University (). Kat has been quoted in the BBC, WIRED, Fast Company, Protocol, and Tech Policy Press. She lives in Stockholm with her adopted husky, where you can find them running around.

In this episode gain unique insights into the historical trajectory, examining the current state of the industry and uncovering the emergence of manipulative design patterns. Kat provides a thought-provoking perspective on the ethical journey of the tech world, highlighting the need for a critical examination of its past, present, and future. Kat offers valuable perspectives on the role companies play in shaping a responsible and ethical technological landscape. Last but not least she also shares her views on the significant role that employee organizing plays in fostering ethical impact within the ever-evolving tech sphere.
