EP.16B Research Communities in Design: how doing a PhD in Design is shaping the discipline? [ENG]

During the 3rd North American PhD by Design symposium, hosted online between the 5th and 10th of April, 2021, the Design in Transition team hosted a Conversation with different doctoral and master's students from across the globe. The discussion took interesting turns as we discussed different approaches on how to define design, bridging the academy and industry, how to develop practice-based research and how to do so in environments or places that do nor align with the Anglo-European design classroom. How can a PhD in Design shape the way we practice design and the way industry approaches design? Is our academic research actually having an impact in "the real world"?

Durante el 3er Simposio Norteamericano de Doctorados en Diseño, realizado en línea entre el 5 y el 10 de abril de 2021, el equipo de Diseño en Transición organizó una conversación con diferentes estudiantes de doctorado y maestría de alrededor del mundo. La discusión tomó giros interesantes a medida que hablamos de diferentes enfoques en definiciones del diseño, el cómo crear puentes entre la academia y la industria, cómo desarrollar la investigación basada en la práctica y cómo hacerlo en entornos o lugares que no se alinean con el aula de diseño anglo-europeo. ¿Cómo puede un doctorado en diseño dar forma a la práctica del diseño y los abordajes de la industria al diseño? ¿La investigación académica en diseño de verdad está teniendo un impacto en "el mundo real"?
