Podcast Episode 5: Briefing Document

Title: “The SAMPLE Method: Gathering Vital Information in Emergencies”

Theme:

The importance of systematically collecting information during clinical assessment using the SAMPLE method, as outlined in the CNESST’s Workplace First Aid Guide (9th Edition).

Key Points:

1. Importance of Information Gathering

• Information collection is a critical step in emergency interventions.

• Objective: To gather details directly related to the health problem or injury.

• Focus areas include:

• Circumstances of the event.

• Signs and symptoms.

• Allergies.

• Medications.

Quote:

• “Gather information connected to the health issue or injury of the person being helped.”

2. The SAMPLE Memory Aid

The SAMPLE method organizes the collection process into six categories:

1. Signs and Symptoms:

• What does the person feel?

• How long have they felt these symptoms?

• Observable signs (e.g., skin color, sweating, tremors).

• Other noticeable symptoms.

2. Allergies:

• Does the person have allergies (medications, food, animals, or other)?

• If so, which ones?

3. Medications:

• Is the person taking any medications?

• If so, why? Have they taken them consistently in recent days or today?

4. Past Medical History:

• Does the person have any health issues (e.g., diabetes, epilepsy, heart, respiratory, or kidney problems)?

• Have they recently undergone surgery that could affect their current condition?

5. Last Meal:

• When was the person’s last meal?

6. Events Leading to the Emergency:

• What happened before the person became ill or injured?

• Were there unusual circumstances or triggers?

Quote:

• “The SAMPLE memory aid ensures that no critical detail is overlooked during the assessment process.”

3. Conclusion

The SAMPLE method provides a structured and thorough approach to gathering information in emergencies. This tool helps first responders make informed decisions, ensuring optimal care and intervention.
