I have been reminded today that it is sometimes easier and seems justifiable to lovingly put other people first, before spending time with God. Concisely put, I could say we are doing for God before being with Him. However, actually, Jesus is recounted as telling His disciples that our first commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul and mind. The second commandment is to love our neighbour as thyself.(See Matthew 22:37-39) So, yes, we are indeed to "do" love for God but first we are to "be" with Love so that we can learn how to be loved and how to love others. God is Love. "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is Love". (1 John 4:8). In other words, when we know Love by spending time with Love, we are then able to do Love.
