Today in History: Shabbat Nachamu (Sabbath of Consolation) is the Sabbath that comes after the 9th of Av. It gets its name from the Haftarah in Isaiah 40, “Comfort, O comfort My people [Nachamu, nachamu ami].” It is the first of the 7 “Haftarot of Comfort.” The encouraging prophetic readings on Shabbat lead all the way up to Rosh HaShanah (Trumpets). Tu B'Av (the 15th of Av) is known as the “Festival of Love.” In ancient times, people celebrated that the yearly gathering of wood for the Temple altar was finished. The daughters of Jerusalem would go out to dance in the vineyards. Whoever was not married would go there to find a bride (tradition, see b.Taanit 31a).

Today in History: The Prophet Ezekiel received a rebuke from the LORD for some elders of Israel in Babylon (see Ezekiel 20). In the year 586 BCE, the Babylonians burned the first Holy Temple and the rest of Jerusalem (see Jeremiah 52:12). In the year 70 CE, the second Holy Temple continued to burn (according to tradition). In 2005 CE, the Israeli military forced thousands of Jews to leave their homes and their land in Gush Katif in Gaza. Some in the Israeli government thought this would help bring peace for Israel, but it did not. The Three Weeks of sadness, between the Fast of Tamuz and the Fast of Av, come to an end.

Today in History: The Fast of Av (Tisha B'Av) is the biblical “fast of the fifth month” (Zechariah 7:3; 8:19) and lasts from sunset to sunset. It's the saddest day of the year, when many tragedies happened. But in the Final Redemption, it will be turned into a festival. All the men of fighting age who rebelled and refused to go into the Promised Land were condemned to wander 40 years and die in the wilderness (tradition, Numbers 14). In the year 586 BCE, the Babylonians destroyed the first Holy Temple (see 2 Kings 25:9). In the year 70 CE, the Romans burned down the second Holy Temple. In 133 CE, the Romans crushed the Jewish “Bar Kochba” revolt at the city of Beitar. In 1290 CE, King Edward I forced all Jewish people to leave England. In 1492 CE, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella expelled all Jewish people from Spain. In 1941 CE, just before the 9th of Av, the German Nazis decide to try to kill all Jews. In 1942 CE, the Nazis began taking masses of Jews from Warsaw, Poland to kill them in camps.

Today in History:The twelve spies returned from Canaan (see Numbers 13:25–33). Ten spies gave a bad report about the Land, and persuaded the people to not go into it. In the year 67 CE, civil war broke out in Jerusalem, leading to its destruction. Shabbat Chazon (Sabbath of Vision) is the Sabbath just before the Fast of Av. It is the “saddest” Sabbath of the year. Its name comes from the Haftarah in Isaiah 1. “The vision [chazon] of Isaiah the son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem.”
