Or so he thought. Merckx would later test positive for norephedrine - a decongestant - and Gimondi was subsequently awarded the win. In April the following year, a commission would ultimately accept that Merckx had not knowingly taken the banned substance, having been prescribed a cough syrup by his doctor while suffering from bronchitis.
