An in depth understanding of Indigenous ways of caring for country, community and self through a modern lens that honours and incorporates the old ways of our ancestors. A Indigenous led podcast that shares sustainable practices and problems we face as an Indigenous community around climate action and change. Season 1 is a series of conversations with the volunteers who were integral in establishing and organising the Flood Relief Hub at the Koori Mail in Lismore that quickly and organically evolved in the first few days after the devastating floods on the Northern Rivers of NSW, Australia, 28th February 2022 - the largest flood in colonial history reaching 14.4 metres. The Koori Mail Flood Relief Hub supported the whole of Lismore and surrounding communities as a place for people to access donations and volunteer help. It provided free food, clothing, cleaning products and equipment, medical and wellbeing assistance and much, much more. For many months throughout 2022 the Koori Mail was a place to go for people to find their way back home.

Episode 4 with Kirilly Dawn
Episode 4 of Custodial Care, Ella interviews Kirilly about her experience volunteering at the Koori Mail Flood Hub after the February 2022 floods on the Northern Rivers of NSW. Kirilly is a Barkindji woman, she is a doula and also works in birth advocacy, somatics and bodywork. All of her work revolves around care, for women, for children, for community and here she reflects on the organic evolution of the Koori Mail Flood Hub that was driven by the care and energy of volunteers. Kirilly became a pivotal contact at the Hub, helping people in isolated areas after the floods by facilitating information into local action; local helicopter owners, local truck owners, people who could transport food and supplies to cut off communities and individuals. She and Ella consider concepts around the value of care in our society, capitalism, colonisation and the care economy, and how natural disasters reveal the deep importance of relationships, community and care for human survival. https://kirillydawn.com/ https://www.thereturning.com.au/postpartum-care
