How should we best support our artists? Is guaranteed income a possible future for them? Have you heard of programs like this?
This week’s guest, Kara Fan, is an artist who received $1,000 per month for 18 consecutive months from Creatives Rebuild New York during the post-pandemic era. She’s one of 2,400 artists in New York State who have benefited from this program. It’s a game-changer, inviting us to imagine the possibility which artists are having a relative financially stablized future .
Kara Fan: (they/she) is a 1st-generation Chinese-American artist born and raised in New Jersey, now based in Queens where their maternal side settled in the late-80s. Navigating their practice in this late capitalist hellscape has been as much of a nightmare as it’s been a delight, but now they want out. With the support from CRNY, Kara co-founded F234 Film Productions, which has allowed them to delve deeper into themes of healing, health, and agency. Additionally their involvement with the Ain’t I A Woman?! Campaign has further fueled their commitment to labor justice. Episode supported by Creative Rebuild NY: CRNY is a three-year, $125 million investment in the financial stability of New York State artists and the organizations that employ them. CRNY provides guaranteed income and employment opportunities for 2,700 artists whose primary residence is in New York State. These two programs work to alleviate unemployment of artists, continue the creative work of artists in partnership with organizations and their communities, and enable artists to continue working and living in New York State under less financial strain.
