Episode 10: The Highway of Tears - Part 1
In this episode of Crime and Prayers, we begin our three-part journey along Canada’s Highway of Tears—a 724-kilometer stretch of British Columbia’s Highway 16, where countless Indigenous women and girls have vanished or been found murdered. Despite official recognition of 18 victims by Project E-PANA, Indigenous communities estimate that 40 or more lives have been lost along this desolate highway. We explore the systemic issues, including poverty, lack of transportation, and ongoing racial injustice, that have heightened these dangers for Indigenous women.
We start by sharing the lives and stories of six victims—Tracey Clifton, Helen Claire Frost, Ginny Sampare, Monica Ignas, Coreen Thomas, and Mary Jane Hill. Each woman’s story reflects a life cut short and a family left grieving, united in their call for justice and remembrance. With compassion and respect, we honor their memories and reflect on the continued challenges faced by their loved ones in seeking answers.
