Podcast – Welcoming Newly Arriving Children from Ukraine: Considerations for schools

In this 20-minute podcast, we discuss three areas relating to supporting newly arriving children from Ukraine into Irish primary schools:-

1. Primary School Life in Ukraine

Firstly, we speak to Iryna Britanova-Listratenko, a Ukrainian teacher who recently arrived in Ireland with her daughter Sasha. Iryna provides an insight into how the Ukrainian primary school system operates. She also details the first-hand reality of a child leaving their native country at such short notice in unprecedented circumstances.

2. Admission Considerations and Department of Education Supports

Secondly, Fergal Kelly, Catholic Primary School Management Association (CPSMA) Education Advisor, outlines admission considerations for schools enrolling Ukrainian children, as well as current and planned supports from the Department of Education.

3. Advice for School Staff Supporting Children in a time of War

Finally, Michelle McCarthy, Educational Psychologist with the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS), offers advice for school staff in relation to the integration of pupils arriving from a country at war, as well as considerations for existing school pupils.
