I know in this episode I said I would post it after we released episode 45, but it was such a joy to meet such an inspirational individual that I hope all of our listeners get as much out of this episode as I did recording it. ------------ There are many jobs that deserve higher recognition than they are given, from nursing, to teaching, to safety personnel, all designed to better our society. In the world of wildland firefighting, their job is to save lives while also preserving the environment at the cost of their own protection. In this Bonus Episode (one of many that will be released over the next several months), I talk with Lea Bossler, wildland firefighter and mental health advocate as she walks me through the unknown ‘extreme-ness’ of wildland firefighting in America. From poor healthcare to mental and physical conditions that well exceed a 9-5 job, she explains in beautiful clarity what this profession means to her and those of her colleagues invested in ‘the mission’. This calling attracts many people with ADHD, which can be linked to trauma, but at the same time provides a community and brotherhood, whose bonds cannot be broken. To learn more about Lea’s work, I highly suggestion reading her article available through Mystery Ranch called ‘What happens with your world ends?’ https://www.mysteryranch.com/backbone-lea-bossler?srsltid=AfmBOoqwutpaqbtJb13RTiq_ALSV1nLe14VoQLimF0Biaf2Hn4ei24JR Also, please consider supporting the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, which supports Wildland firefighters and their families when tragedies strike: https://wffoundation.org/ And finally, while I do mention that this is the second to last of our podcast episodes, in an ideal world we would love to do more. But to do so, we need your support. If you could follow us on Apple and Spotify and write a review, we would greatly appreciate it. #coffeeandcocktailspodcast #wildlandfirefighting #mentalhealth #mysteryranch #wff

Ep. 34: Travel Photography, Power, and Post-Colonialism
In this episode, lecturer in Pakistan Studies, Sonia Gulzeb Abbasi, takes us through a tour of the background history of travel photography in the Middle East and Africa and its potential link to modern day notions of power and post-colonialism. Nowadays a very common motif for bloggers on social media sites like Instagram, she advises listeners to pay attention to the ethical implications behind travel photography, especially when Western photographers avoid photographic consent and profit from ‘othering’ minors. This deep dive into concerns surrounding ‘poverty porn’ and the ‘white saviour complex’ is designed to critique how Westerners choose to portray and make sense of other cultures, focusing more on their negative aspects rather than celebrating their cultural positives. ***** If you'd like to support the continuation of this show, consider becoming a Patron starting at £1 per month: https://www.patreon.com/coffeeandcocktailspodcast
