60 - Virtue of Truth (3)

The Yetzer Hora constantly makes requests of a person and craves that he will agree to whatever he asks. However, the Yetzer Hora does not have the ability to fulfill this desire without the agreement of the intellect of the person, there needs to be a rationalization and consent before doing anything wrong. When the lazy person is told that his Rebbe is in his city to teach him, he responds there's a lion in the street and its too dangerous. This twisted thinking is a rationalization caused by his laziness. If the desire is there a person has the ability to believe whatever he wants. R' Yisroel Salanter suggests that in order to stand up to these rationalizations we must toil to strive for truth in all our interactions until we develop within ourselves an abhorrence for falseness.

Mishlei 1:22; Rabbenu Yona ibid.

Mesillas Yesharim - 9th Perek

Ohr Yisroel 4
