Over the past decade, the European Union has been in a constant state of crisis – at least according to most observers. Moving beyond the crisis perspective, this project pays special attention to those dimensions of European integration that are often overlooked. It examines forms of continuity, stability, and renewal and draws on examples from history and our own times. Such dynamics are often hidden and beyond the focus of public debates. While the EU has been put under a lot of pressure, order contestation has often resulted in reformatting, reshaping, and reinforcing existing arrangements, not in institutional demise or discontinuation.

In den letzten zehn Jahren befand sich die Europäische Union in einem ständigen Krisenzustand – zumindest nach Ansicht der meisten Beobachter:innen: Die Flüchtlings- und die Euro-Krise, der Klimawandel, der Brexit und in jüngster Zeit die Corona-Pandemie und die russische Invasion der Ukraine. | Während alle diese Entwicklungen die EU unter erheblichen Druck gesetzt haben, sind die Begriffe „Krise“ und „Krisenpolitik“ zu Oberbegriffen von begrenztem analytischem Wert geworden: Einerseits werden die zentrifugalen und desintegrativen Kräfte überbetont; andererseits lässt der ständige Fokus auf das Krisenhafte die immense Unterschiedlichkeit der Herausforderungen, denen sich die EU gegenüber sieht, verschwimmen. | Befindet sich das Konzept „Europa“ also in der Krise – oder übt es doch noch immer eine starke Anziehungskraft aus? Die Vortragsreihe ist Teil des CAS-Schwerpunktes „Order Contestation“, der unter Sprecherschaft von Prof. Dr. Kiran Klaus Patel (Geschichtswissenschaft) und Prof. Dr. Berthold Rittberger (Politikwissenschaft) am CAS arbeitet. | Zum Auftakt der Vortragsreihe steht Europa als Konzept und als Gedankengebäude im Mittelpunkt. Dabei soll es auch darum gehen, auszuloten, wie Europa und die EU als historischer und gegenwärtiger Raum vermittelt werden können. | Es diskutieren die Direktorin des Hauses der Europäischen Geschichte in Brüssel, Constanze Itzel, Kiran Klaus Patel als Professor für Neuere und Neueste Geschichte an der LMU, mit Schwerpunkt auf der Europäischen Geschichte (jüngste Publikation in diesem Zusammenhang: Europäische Integration. Geschichte und Gegenwart, München: C. H. Beck, 2022) und die Journalistin Karoline Meta Beisel, die stellvertretende Leiterin des Ressorts Politik bei der SZ ist.
