How to Protect Economies and Livelihoods in COVID-19 Times
In COVID-19 times, governments have a responsibility to save lives but this goes hand in hand with the responsibility to save livelihoods. Locking down parts of our economies is necessary so that the human capital stock can be kept healthy and economies can have a solid footing on which to rebound. In the Caribbean, transmission of economic shocks from past crises, such as 9/11 and the Global Financial Crisis, have impacted vital economic sectors such as tourism and trade but the extent and levels of impact from COVID-19 are like no other. Policymakers, therefore, can't run with their standard playbook. David Rosenblatt, Regional Economic Advisor, and Henry Mooney, Research Economic Advisor, from the IDB's Caribbean Economics Department delve deeper into these issues and highlight the policy steps that are best suited for the region to take in this podcast hosted by Golda Lee Bruce, IDB Caribbean Department Communications Coordinator.
