Notes:

Dictonary.com

The persistent inability to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's own effort or skills

Imposter Syndrome is very prevalent in the workplace

The why isn't always going to be clear

Every person is a human, all humans think differently, have different pasts, different traumas, different work experiences, different school experiences, etc.

Signs of imposter syndrome:

  1. Self-doubt
  2. Self-sabotage
  3. Perfectionism
  4. Difficulty accepting praise
  5. Negative self talk
  6. Constantly comparing yourself to others
  7. Overachieving
  8. Fear of failure
  9. Minimizing your success
  10. Fear you won't live up to expectations
  11. Burnout
  12. Workaholic - too many hours
  13. Minimize your brilliance
  14. Constant need for external validation
  15. Lacking confidence
  16. Difficulty dealing with pressure
  17. Anxiety
  18. Feeling like you're not good enough
  19. Distrust or ignoring your intuition
  20. You're the best of worst, no middle ground
  21. Not applying to jobs despite being qualified

What causes imposter syndrome?

A lot of things can cause us to get imposter syndrome

A few examples:

  • School or work pressure
  • Childhood experiences (constantly being criticized)
  • Perfectionism
  • Mental health status - bad week
  • Mental health disorders (examples: OCD, Anxiety)
  • Success - achieved it but feel you don't deserve it
  • Personality traits
  • Lack of diversity and representation
  • Major life changes
  • Societal expectations

I've personally struggled with imposter syndrome many times.

Sometimes it's a phase of life that it something I had to work through for extended periods of time (Example - layoff )

Others it may pop up quickly and temporarily (Example - working on website)

How can imposter syndrome impact your career?

  1. Work-life balance problems
  2. Burnout
  3. Missed opportunities
  4. Trash communication
  5. Lack of career progression
  6. Decreased career satisfaction
  7. Fear of failure (analysis paralysis)
  8. Lack of self-development or motivation to do any
  9. Procrastination
  10. Confidence takes a hit

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

  1. Own it / acknowledge it
  2. Talk about it
  3. Retrain your mind (correct self-doubting thoughts, turn them into affirmations and keep repeating them)
  4. Ask for help/support
  5. Learn to accept praise
  6. Take time for mindfulness and / or meditation
  7. Set realistic goals
  8. Learn to be flexible (goals, perfectionism)
  9. Learn new skills
  10. May want or need to get help from a counselor or therapist, etc.
  11. Facts vs feelings (great review vs feeling like you're not doing enough)
  12. Embrace failure and the lessons it brings
  13. Remind yourself of whats important to you
  14. Recognize and stop the spiral
  15. Talk to yourself how you'd talk to your best friend (kindness, compassion)
