The Church is the pillar and support of the truth (1 Timothy 3:15), called to evangelize and make disciples as a preserving and illuminating force in a fallen world (Matthew 5:13–14).

Yet throughout major epochs of American Church history, her efforts to engage culture have been marked by clumsy mistakes.
