Jesus declared that all of the Old Testament, beginning with Moses’ writings related to Him (Luke 24:27). Throughout our study of Genesis we have sought to reveal Jesus and His gospel. The better we see Jesus throughout the Bible the more we understand God’s love and respond with love and worship. Today, we have one of the most beautiful pictures of Jesus painted in the Old Testament narrative that makes us want to join the heavenly host in worship.
Genesis 21 shows God’s sovereign grace turning conflicts into peace and reconciliation through faith, compassion, and peacemaking, as seen in Isaac’s birth, Hagar and Ishmael’s rescue, and Abraham’s covenant with Abimelech, pointing to the New Covenant where Jesus’ sacrifice reconciles us to God.
The life of faith is like a trapeze where we are tested to step off a platform of self-confidence and reach for a bar that God provides that brings us to a platform of God-confidence. The term “intimacy” refers to close familiarity, friendship, and relationship. It relates to mutual affection, companionship, understanding. However, the term can also refer to a cozy atmosphere (e.g. An intimate bistro), and of course there is the euphemistic reference to sexual behavior. God’s covenant with Abraham reveals His pattern of grace: the Lord gives us a new identity, secured by His promises, which produces wholehearted obedience. We are secured, and God’s promises are certain for us, not because of our performance, but through faith in Christ.
