President John S.K. Kauwe III encouraged us to “choose excellence” by using our moral agency wisely and being quick to observe: noticing, obeying, and acting on promptings. He urged students to care for their mental and physical health, take charge of their testimonies and learning, and build their futures.

President John S.K. Kauwe III has served as the president of Brigham Young University–Hawaii since July 2020. Before his appointment at BYU–Hawaii, President Kauwe served as a professor, department chair, and dean at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He is an accomplished scientist having published more than 120 peer-reviewed papers and holding multiple patents for Alzheimer’s disease treatments that are currently under clinical development.
In addition to his academic and professional achievements, President Kauwe was sustained as an Area Seventy for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints one and a half years ago, where he serves with dedication and faith.
