Social Security rules favor married people and disadvantage divorced, prematurely widowed, and lifelong single older adults, creating economic gaps that mostly impact women. Using data from a long-term study of White high school graduates, the research found married older adults enjoy higher income and lower poverty rates, while divorced women and those widowed young face the greatest financial risks. Policy reforms like caregiver credits could help reduce these inequalities in late-life economic security.

Dr. Kristine de Valck, Professor of Marketing and Dean of Degree Programs at HEC Paris, shares insights from her research, “Why Online Consumption Communities Brutalize.”
Online consumption communities can sometimes turn hostile, with members engaging in insults, harassment, or trolling a phenomenon known as brutalization. While brief outbursts are common, some communities become persistently toxic. Studying 18 years of interactions in an online electronic dance music community, the authors identify three mutually reinforcing forms of violence sadistic entertainment, clan warfare, and popular justice that drive sustained community brutalization. The article presents these patterns, supports them with empirical data, and explores their implications for understanding violence in online communities.
