Prof. David Silver of the University of British Columbia discusses key ideas from his newly released book, “Corporations and Persons: A Theory of the Firm in Democratic Society.” The book argues that corporations are moral persons with duties toward democratic society. It proposes a persons-based theory of the firm, which sees the creation of products and services that benefit people as its core purpose, distinct from profit-maximization views. It emphasizes that corporations’ rights and duties should be shaped democratically, that societies can structure firms to serve justice, and that the corporate–society relationship must evolve from dysfunction to mutual respect to protect democratic values. Unique You: Dr. Nigel Nicholson on Unlocking the Power of Individuality
Dr. Nigel Nicholson, Emeritus Professor of Organisational Behaviour at London Business School, shares key insights from his upcoming book, “Unique You: How Individuality Works and Why It Matters.” Unique You explores the concept of Unique Individuality (UI), the distinctive blend of biology, experience, and personal narrative that makes each person one of a kind. Dr. Nicholson shows that while our uniqueness is innate, much of it remains hidden, shaped through self-discovery, relationships, culture, and the stories we tell about our lives. Using his 4D framework Destiny, Drama, Deliberation, and Development he illustrates how life unfolds in unique, non-linear journeys and emphasizes that true fulfillment comes from embracing individuality rather than conforming to societal categories. Relationships act as mirrors for our UI, culture offers choices rather than dictates and acknowledging both our strengths and shadows is key to authenticity. Creativity, vision, and transcendence are peak expressions of UI, nurtured by supportive environments and reflective practices. In an age of rapid change, our human uniqueness our capacity for creativity, connection, and ethical living remains irreplaceable. Ultimately, our individuality is both a gift and a responsibility and embracing it while helping others do the same enriches ourselves, our communities, and the future.
