British Beauty Council - Career Insights
British Beauty Council
11 episodes

The negative impact of the pandemic on students and those aspiring to a career in the beauty industry has been huge. Many in the industry have been furloughed or laid off, while those studying for a career in the beauty industry have had to continue their studies online. Universities and colleges across the UK are planning to deliver a virtual curriculum, with little if any face-to-face contact. This will make motivation more challenging, particularly with less exposure to industry guest lecturers, who normally provide inspiration to students during their studies.

In response to these issues, the British Beauty Council is launching a podcast series featuring interviews with some of the biggest names in the hair and beauty industry to discover how they have got to where they are today. From key lessons learnt along the way, to what advice they would give their younger selves, this podcast series aims to educate and motivate those starting out in the industry or wanting a career change.

Episode 1: Sam Farmer

This week, as part of British Science week our President of Education Pillar, Elizabeth Barnett-Lawton, speaks to Sam Farmer, cosmetic scientist and owner of the unisex, personal care range for teenagers, ‘SAM FARMER’.

It was only when Sam’s children reached puberty that he became aware of the manipulative and sexist biases surrounding young people’s cosmetic products. Sam believed that the derogatory imagery and wording was creating more harm than good and decided to take action. From making his very first deodorant to now owning his own brand, this episode sees how Sam left his career in television to become a Cosmetic Scientist and Entrepreneur.
