We are only in charge of writing our own stories, with Shelley Rodriguez from Hope for the Warriors (Ep 8)

In today’s episode Sarah chats with Shelley Rodriguez of Hope for the Warriors.

Sarah first met Shelley at an in-person veteran caregiver wellness workshop in Virginia. Shelley was part of the amazing team pouring into veteran caregivers, helping them take a day of rest for themselves, and to have a time out from dealing with all the ways war had come home.

Shelley is a Texas native and has worked for Hope for the Warriors since 2012, when she was hired to develop and implement the family reintegration program. Since that time she has worked as a regional social worker and is currently the program director of Critical Care Coordination, the largest distributor of direct financial assistance and case management services within clinical health and wellness.

Shelley is married to Col. Cesar Rodriguez, of the United States Marine Corps of Summerville, Texas. They have two children: Isabell, who is 24 and married to Marine Sergeant Andrew Wormington, and continuing her graduate education; and Isaac, who is 20 and is attending college in Arkansas and playing basketball.

In this episode we chat about:

  • Building a career despite multiple military moves
  • Sometimes you can do all the things, just not all at once
  • How Hope for the Warriors helps families
  • Healing through sharing your story
  • Exercise as a coping strategy
  • How to stay positive when helping people when there are never-ending needs
  • Creating boundaries to prevent burnout
  • How to build a support network

We hope you enjoy the show and please continue the conversation in the comments on our website, where you can also find links to all the resources mentioned in the show:
