Transform Surviving into Thriving with Army Veteran Catherine Bane (Episode 4)
"It opened something that was both terrifying and amazing at the same time." –Catherine Bane on sharing her story In today’s episode Sarah chat’s with Catherine Bane, a member of the Hope for the Warriors community. After finishing high school in 2003, Catherine Bane was excited to join the U.S. Army as a chaplain assistant. Her grandfather, father, and six of her brothers served in the armed forces, and she was proud to add to the family’s legacy. Her excitement quickly diminished after a sexual assault. Within the first year of her service, she realized her experience in the military was very different than what her family had experienced. In May of 2015, Catherine ran her first Hope for the Warriors half-marathon, and it was there she became involved with the organization that set her on the path to healing she walks today. Catherine is now married with three children. She and her family enjoy running together, and they set a family goal of running 100 miles in honor of Hope for the Warriors. She offers those who have also experienced sexual assault in the military some hard-earned words of wisdom: Catherine says, “This is your journey; be patient with yourself and never give up. You are worth fighting for, and you aren’t alone in this fight. You can get your life back.” In this episode we chat about: - Ignoring trauma as a coping strategy - Shame surrounding healing from sexual assault - Running as medicine - Going from surviving to thriving - The power of sharing your story to heal yourself and others - How healing is a slow journey with many steps - Using superficial relationships to avoid dealing with trauma - How receiving is giving - Virtually meeting with a therapist in your car We hope you enjoy the show and please continue the conversation in the comments on our website, where you can also find links to all the resources mentioned in the show: https://www.bravelove.tv/learning-to-transform-surviving-into-thriving-with-catherine-bane-episode-4
