Being a nurse is not a profession for the faint-hearted. Nurses deal with life, death, and everything in between.
It’s a common misconception that nurses simply carry out the doctors’ orders. Nurses are front and centre, monitoring patients’ responses to prescribed interventions and notifying physicians when unwanted or negative outcomes arise. Nurses are responsible for all orders that are carried out, including those that are wrong or contraindicated.
As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic accelerates, global health care systems have become overwhelmed, leading to great psychological pressure on nurses in the care of critically ill patients with COVID-19. Nurses can make a significant impact on global health, if only they feel empowered to take their seat at the political table.
