Marquita was born in Washington, D.C. to a family from the beautiful island of Jamaica. Although hardworking Marquita studied criminal law and considered becoming a judge advocate general in the military, she found her true calling in the mental health field. As a teenager, Marquita had to face a hurdle that changed her life. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and believed that her life would be a short one. Luckily for us, Marquita beat cancer and looked forward to life as an adult! She married, had children, and bought a house... and then the cancer returned. Again, Marquita feared that her life was never meant to be a long one, and that she would never have the opportunity to accomplish her goals. Her cancer treatments left scars both physical and emotional. Once again, Marquita beat cancer, and then she knew that she is here for a reason, and that her life has purpose. "I learned from both of those moments that life is not over for me," Marquita says. "My story is not ending." Her motto, Veni, Vidi, Vici, from Julius Caesar, means, "I came, I saw, I conquered."
