Cha-ching! Bankrolling Bladder Cancer and Financial Toxicity

Yikes, cancer is costly!

Not exactly one of my more upbeat podcasts, but financial toxicity is real, and cancer patients need solutions.  In this podcast, I talk about the enormous costs involved in treating and managing bladder cancer; my own out-of-pocket expenses in just four years, and how dealing with the financial strains of ongoing care can take its toll on the mental and physical health and well-being of cancer patients.

On a positive note, there are tools available to help with navigating the complex and costly cancer-highway, as well as some very good folks who are working on ways to ease the burden of expense, while continuing to provide quality care at all socio-economic levels.

In this podcast, I mention TriageCancer.org, a site with a wealth of information and webinars on the financial and legal aspects of dealing with cancer, as well as the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, BCAN.org, whose tireless efforts in providing information to bladder cancer patients is unparalleled worldwide.  Please be sure to register for BCAN's free "Ask the Experts" virtual event on May 25th at 7 pm. One of the featured physicians in this event is Dr. Sumeet Bhanvadia, Assistant Professor of Urology at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine.  Dr. Bhanvadia was a winner of BCAN's Young Investigators Award for her study focusing on assessing the extent of financial toxicity experienced by bladder cancer patients across a broad range of race, ethnicity, insurance type and socio-economic status. Register here for this free webinar!

Please join my "Sharing is Caring" campaign to share a story from your bladder cancer journey.  You can leave me a voice mail by recording it on this link:  https://anchor.fm/cindy-lawson8/message Or just send me an email at bladdercancertalk@gmail.com.  Be sure to include some contact information in your voice mail or email so that I can reach out to you.  Sharing your story with other bladder cancer patients is a great way to support each other on this journey that we all travel together.
