Doing a PhD in Law, with Rees Johnson

Episode trigger warnings: Mental health, mentions of substance abuse and domestic violence.

In this episode, I have a chat with Rees Johnson who is studying for a PhD in Law at the University of Manchester. We touch on Foucault, have a bit of a discussion about the subject of assisted dying, but mainly we focus on supervision, which is a key component of all PhD projects. We speak about some of the challenges Rees has faced in supervision, how he overcame them, and how his experiences have changed him and his plans for the future.

Guest speaker bio

Rees Johnson is a final year PhD student in the Department of Law at the University of Manchester. His PhD is self-funded and examines the ideological and historical contexts of assisted death. He applies a critical historiographical method to uncover the machinations of power that underpin the debate and that are so often overlooked within the conventional narrative of assisted death.

Prior to attending the University of Manchester, Rees graduated Newcastle University with a Distinction and 80% in his dissertation that examined European nature conservation law through an accommodationist lens. Alongside his PhD, Rees also sits as a the found Chair of the Manchester Think Tank, a student led consortium of PGR/PGT researchers from the University of Manchester, Man Met and Salford University. Rees also actively campaigns for widening participation within legal doctoral study through the Black Legal Scholarship Fund. You can follow this initiative on Twitter (@BLSFund).

Host bio

Nina Higson-Sweeney is a first-year PhD student in the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath. Her PhD is funded by the ESRC through the South West Doctoral Training Partnership, and she is using mixed methods to explore the symptom of fatigue within adolescent depression. Prior to her PhD, Nina completed a BSc in Psychology and a MSc Health Psychology at the University of the West of England. Nina has contributed to several peer-reviewed journal articles throughout her degrees, exploring topics such as depression, CFS/ME, HIV, and loneliness and mental health in children and young people. You can follow her on Twitter (@n_higsonsweeney) and ResearchGate.
