Black and Gay, Back in the Day brings to life a photo archive of Black LGBTQIA+ life in Britain, from the 1970s through to the early 2000s.
Each episode is an intergenerational journey focusing on a key photograph from the archive - joining stories of the past, with those of today. Marc Thompson is our gentle, inquisitive and warm guide to the archive, helping a rotation of younger Black LGBTQIA+ co-hosts navigate these often untold stories. Each episode covers a different theme drawn out of a single photograph from the collection, submerging you into Black LGBTQIA+ history
This eye opening series highlights the importance of Black LGBTQIA+ history, amplifying the work of its founders Marc Thompson and Jason Okundaye, as we repaint the photographs through audio, helping to facilitate the mission of honouring and remembering Black queer life in Britain. Find the instagram photo archive here.
Black and Gay, Back in the Day is an Aunt Nell Production, supported by the Audio Content Fund.
CONTENT WARNING: This podcast is about the experience of Black LGBTQIA+ communities with open discussion about racism, homophobia, transphobia and sexual discrimination.

Multidisciplinary artist, Jacob V Joyce, guides us through Black LGBTQIA+ creativity and art whilst considering queer and anti-colonial narratives today. Starting with a black and white photograph which shows a man standing, leaning on a piano with his left arm Jacob tracks down the subject of this image. Ajamu X is a fine art photographer and posed for this picture in his hometown of Huddersfield in 1983. Together they reflect on the power of art for and by Black LGBTQIA+ communities from the 70’s to today.
