Black Returned Peace Corps Volunteers Series: Part 2 - Nyassa Kollie

Nyassa Kollie is a Chicagoland recruiter for the U.S. Peace Corps. She served as a Secondary School English Educator in Peace Corps Malawi from 2015 to 2017. She then continued to serve as a Peace Corps Response volunteer in Malawi from 2017 to 2018. During service Nyassa worked closely with community based organizations to engage and empower adolescent young girls on projects surrounding environmental education, drought resistant agriculture practices, HIV/AIDS awareness/risk reduction, and gender based violence awareness. During her second service, Nyassa took on the role as a District Coordinator for a PEPFAR program and worked on coordinating the implementation of the program around the district while coordinating 11 NGOs and engaging with local Malawian government.

Before joining Peace Corps as a recruiter, Nyassa worked in the nonprofit sector working with education programming for children birth to five in Chicago. As a Chicagoland native, Nyassa enjoys exploring the different pockets of the city, working on launching her coffee + plant business, and volunteering as a mentor at GirlForward, an organization dedicated to empowering refugee girls aged 12-21 from over 30 countries, who have resettled in areas around Chicago. She is a proud alumna of the University of Iowa.
